I saw a clip the other night on Jon Stewart’s program. It featured some big tent event in Kentucky. People show up to eat their brains out with prodigious quantities of food then listen to politicians snipe at each other. I wonder how the folks manage to keep the hotdogs and burgers down.
The Democratic challenger to Republican Mitch McConnell fired several rhetorical rounds into the incumbent senator, whose expression never changed. When it was his turn to speak, it was all about Obama.
But it’s not just Republicans using the president as a foil for their election campaigns. Comes now Hillary Clinton with guns ablazin’. Despite serving as Obama’s secretary of state, she has turned her coat, distancing herself from the president, while portraying herself as a willing executioner of foreign peoples. She told The Atlantic magazine:
Great nations need organizing principles, and ‘Don’t do stupid stuff’ is not an organizing principle.
What would she do? From the New York Times:
His view is cautious, inward-looking, suffused with a sense of limits, while hers is muscular, optimistic, unabashedly old-fashioned.
“You know, when you’re down on yourself, and when you are hunkering down and pulling back, you’re not going to make any better decisions than when you were aggressively, belligerently putting yourself forward,” she told The Atlantic.
I’d say she’s running away from Obama and directly toward the White House. We’ll see if she gets there.
